36 executives and venture capitalists participated in the SVEN invitational at Mayacama, the private top 100 course north of San Francisco. The event was sponsored by Micron and The PGA TOUR, with over $5,000 prizes awarded to numerous winners. SVEN had the entire course closed for our event.

Over 50 executives and venture capitalists attended the latest tech summit that Geoffrey Moore facilitated for Silicon Valley Executive Network. In addition, Stewart Alsop was also brought on as a special event moderator. Together, Geoffrey and Stewart interactively interviewed top executives from Google, Yahoo, Facebook, eBay, Oracle, and Intuit as the battle of high tech giants continues in the Silicon Valley ecosystem. The participating SVEN executives played their standard interactive role in the discussion and debate to help all of us better understand the dynamic nature of the high tech ecosystem for the most influential companies impacting that change.

March-26-2010 Salesforce Golf & Technology Update

20 SVEN executives and Venture Capitalists convened for the Salesforce Golf & Technology Update. The executive participants received a detailed briefing on Salesforce initiatives from Brett Queener, SVP of Products at Salesforce, including industry overview, future of the SaaS model, acquisition strategy, as well as new technology development overviews such as Chatter. Business discussion was followed by golf at TPC Stonebrae, which was set up in conditions as they prepare for upcoming Nationwide Tour event.

Feb 16-19, 2010 Arizona Trip & Accenture Match Play
|
SVEN executives were special VIP guests of Accenture, at the Accenture Match Play Championship PGA event in Tuscon, Arizona. SVEN execs walked with the players inside the ropes during the matches. Additionally, the participants played 3 of the top private courses in Arizona during the trip (Stone Canyon, Mirabel, and Whisper Rock) to accompany business discussions throughout the 4 days in the sun.

Cisco Business Event with Consumer Strategy Focus |
50 Silicon Valley executives and venture capitalists were VIP guests of Cisco & SVEN for the day, where John Chambers (Cisco's Chairman and CEO) and other Cisco executives outlined big picture strategy for the company, with a specific emphasis on Cisco's consumer focus and related activities, acquisitions, product marketing, and more. In typical SVEN format, the dialog was very interactive with the executive speakers, where participants provided detailed feedback, challenges and questions where appropriate, and even new ideas. After a half day session, a subset of the attendees and Cisco executives participated in a private dinner where the conversations continued, and the personal relationships were enhanced.

SVEN Tech Summit at Cordevalle
|
Over 50 high tech executives and venture capitalists convened over 2 days for the first SVEN Tech Summit, which brought top senior leaders from IBM, Cisco, Intel, Oracle, SAP, and HP to be interviewed in detailed 1 on 1 sessions by Geoffrey Moore of TCG Advisors with interactive audience participation from the high tech community. Each senior executive of the 6 tech giants, with Geoffrey's artful moderation, stated and defended the positions as to why their strategies, platforms, and technology bets will move things to their layer of the stack in the network centric world. It was an impressive opportunity to see all 6 tech giants participate in a single day session. This was the first of a 2 part Tech Summit, which will be continued in May 2010 with a set of equally impressive companies focused on volume opportunities. Also on hand for the Nov 4 & 5 Tech Summit was another incredibly valuable public markets update from key leaders of the Capital Group (managing $ 1 Trillion in assets). Additionally, in accordance with standard custom for Silicon Valley Executive Network, we also had 40 of the participating executives involved in a friendly team match over 18 holes of golf at Cordevalle, with a backdrop of beautiful fall weather.

Oct-8 thru Oct-11 2009 President's Cup

We had more than 40 SVEN members attend the President's Cup as personal guests of the PGA to watch the United States team retain the cup against the International Team, with access to private tents and viewing areas. A subset of those also played golf at the California Golf Club prior to attendance on Friday, Oct-9. SVEN is fortunate to enjoy a special relationship with the PGA which enables special privileges like this event.

24 CxO/VP level technology executives and venture capitalists listened to the Directors of Product Management for YouTube to hear a detailed update on the state of consumer video both at YouTube/Google, as well as the general industry. The business discussion was followed by attendance in the owner's luxury suite at AT&T Park for the Giants-Dodgers game.

The business discussion was followed by golf for all of the participants at this Alistar McKenzie course.

25 venture capitalists and high tech executives participated in an interactive business & technology discussion led by Matt Ackley, VP of Internet Marketing at eBay, which was focused on the current trends and future of online advertising. The domain expertise shared by Matt this this industry of was of great value to the participants around directions, challenges, and opportunities in this dynamically changing space. The business discussion was followed by a fantastic golf venue in the Monterey Peninsula CC Shore Course (ranked in Top 100), and finished off with a social gathering at a spectacular private oceanside home on 17-mile drive.

TPC SF Bay Business Networking & Golf Outing

20 venture capitalists and silicon valley technology executives turned out for an afternoon of business networking and golf at TPC SF Bay, only weeks before the Nationwide Tour was to play the course. TPC SF Bay has amazing views of the entire bay area and is now operated by the PGA. All participants were able to catch up and share current activities with fellow executive peers, followed by a round of golf that was conditioned very tough for professional tournament play.

Golf at world class Spyglass Hill golf course in Pebble Beach was followed by a very productive and interactive business discussion with 15 SVEN high-tech executive attendees to debate the current and future state of venture capital. Input and opinions were heard from all attendees, covering every area of representation (venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, angel investors, other startup executives, etc) as most of us in Silicon Valley are impacted by this very critical topic that fuels the innovation cycle. The post golf venue was held at a spectacular private home on 17-mile drive. The content of the discussion was captured in a slide deck and is available to SVEN members upon request.

Arizona Golf, Business, and Accenture MatchPlay Event

The Arizona trip had it all: - golf at 3 of the finest private and resort courses in Tuscon & Scottsdale in 80-85 degree weather - multiple business discussions and interaction with other peer technology executives invited by Accenture to the event throughout the trip - dinner & discussion with Tiger Woods the evening after the highly anticipated first day of his comeback after knee surgery (a match he won)...along with other VIP guests of Accenture - absolutely amazing inside the ropes VIP access on the first day of the Accenture MatchPlay World Golf Championships, allowing us to walk with the players on the course during the actual matches from beginning to end, including having our names announced on the first tee with the PGA players as "honorary observers" of the event

Stanford Golf & Cleantech Business Update

Eric Young of Canaan Partners gave a very detailed update on the state of Cleantech investing and all surrounding angles...from current investment issues to the impact of the new presidential administration and economic stimulus package. All participants left with a much stronger understanding of the subject, and its key challenges and opportunities. After the Cleantech update with 16 attending executives, we squeezed in a round of golf at Stanford Golf Course, as well as dinner afterwards for a subset of the participants.

Cisco Emerging Technology Summit, Facilitated by Geoffrey Moore

For the largest SVEN event to date, we had 60 executives, venture capitalists, and VC portfolio companies at the Cisco Public Telepresence Center in Santa Clara for a moderated discussion by Geoffrey Moore, and featuring Guido Jouret, Cisco's CTO for Emerging Technology. Topics included Video, Collaboration & Energy, including the current trends, challenges, as well as the direction Cisco is headed in each of these focus areas. The event took place simultaneously in 7 different Telepresence video conferencing rooms to share Cisco's technology in this area. Venture Capitalists were able to bring key portfolio company executives in these areas to the event and participate in the discussion, garnering visibility of their companies to Cisco. The 4 hour business event was followed by dinner at Birk's Restaurant for 27 of the attendees, which allowed for extended discussions.

16 executives and venture capitalists participated in an open forum business lunch discussion, followed by a round of golf at the private location of Tehama Golf Club in Carmel Valley. The lunch allowed all 16 executives in attendance to provide a topic to solicit input and guidance from fellow executive attendees. Golf was followed by social time as well as an impromptu dinner for many of the attendees. |

The Preserve Golf, Macroeconomic & Public Markets Discussion

We had 24 executives in attendance to listen to very senior executives from the Capital Group (which manages more than $1 Trillion in assets), provide a current pulse on the public markets and overall macroeconomic conditions, as we all determine the impact of the current financial situation in our own environments in and around the Silicon Valley technology ecosystem...a very timely topic, which emphasized the importance and reliance on our personal networks. The interactive discussion had 24 high tech executives, venture capitalists, and serial entrepreneurs, and was followed by a round of golf at The Preserve in Carmel Valley, now in Golf Digest's Top 100 courses, and one of the most beautiful settings to hold an event (The Santa Lucia Preserve).

Gary Kovacs (VP/GM Mobile & Devices, Adobe Systems) led the business discussion for the event, focusing on trends in the mobile technology space, and explaining Adobe's growing focus in this area. The number of mobile devices that connect to the Internet already outnumber PC's, and more than 1 billion people will access the Internet without a PC in 2009, which signifies the critical need to understand this exploding area of technology. The lunch and business discussion was followed by golf at Cordevalle with 16 technology executives, venture capitalists, and entrepreneurs.

Don Wood of Draper Fisher Jurvetson led an eye opening discussion on global venture investing from the perspective of DFJ, the most active international venture investor. Topics included how significant opportunities outside the United States are growing in rapid numbers as it relates to new startups. This has lead to growing amount of venture funding being raised to meet the demand. Globalization of the venture industry is a fact that Silicon Valley and its venture firms must acknowledge and adapt to remain competitive for the long term. The lunch discussion was followed by golf at Sharon Heights Golf and Country Club by 16 technology executives, venture capitalists, and serial technology entrepreneurs.

Event included a software industry discussion led by Jeff Nolan, VP of Bus Dev & Consumer/Media at Newsgator Technologies (and author of venture chronicles blog). Mayacama Golf Club is ranked #66 on Golf Digest Top 100 in the US.
